RdTE: Round 3

After redesigning the closing tab on the lid, I realized I could apply the same tab system to the sides and top, successfully eliminating any need for glue. I tried two versions: tabs going in and tabs from the inside, out.

Having the tabs start inside and lock to the outside provided the most stability and looked better as well.

Going on a suggestion of folding over the top for a new tab, I got rid of the entire back end because the other tab system proved effective. This eliminated some extra material and made it a bit easier to store napkins, etc without having to open a lid.

I added some text to the inside and sides, making it a little more fun with something to read. I thinks the graphics are working well, except the colors might be too deep. Round 4 in the works.

Redesigning a Takeout Experience: Refinements

Working with the "Double-Decker" packaging concept, I made a few changes for better functionality.

1. Made it much smaller to fit the actual portions given at the restaurant. Also reducing waste and making it easier to eat out of.
2. Brought the lower walls of the design in to create a lip for the top to rest on. Adding stability and the strength to support a full drink.

After, I created a template and tried a few graphics variations.

After viewing the mockups, it seems that the first variation works the best. I also found some flaws in the tab-closing system that need to be worked out and possibly some more material could be removed from the final template. I plan on taking some elements from all the variations and adding some smaller details. Round 3 next.

Redesigning a Takeout Experience

The objective of this assignment is to redesign a take-out food packaging experience with consideration to it’s sustainability. In our throw-away society, restaurants usually specify their packaging choices based on conventional sizes/materials or perceived budget restraints. Not often enough is consideration is given to the user’s experience of it, how it leverages their brand or how it impacts the environment.

So first thing, the Takeout Experience

Through this, I realized that I like drawing takeout experiences, but more importantly I found some flaws in Chipotle's takeout design.

Avoiding the line and ordering process, there were a few issues with the packaging.
1. The bowl was long and not deep enough. Also flimsy when filled with food.
2. The foil lid is a hassle and not biodegradable.
3. My single order was put in one giant bag with napkins and straws just thrown on top.

I came up with some designs that covered these issues as well as aesthetic ones.

all in one serve and transport with
pocket for napkins, etc.
deep burrito shaped bowl
w/ sleeve

"kleenex box" - deep

"movie tray" w/ drink holders

"the double decker" drink holder
with extra storage on top
food in bottom
The last concept proved to be the most effective so I made a second prototype

Also began working on some graphics using the existing Chipotle vernacular. here were some highlights.

Now it's on to refining the packaging and graphic then putting them together.

Semiotics- The Theory of Signs

Signs are things used to mean something else, usually only in context can they be correctly understood. One example is "666". Some people may interpret that as "the mark of the beast" and others would interpret is as merely numbers. Another example is a siren that might be understood as a tornado warning, but on certain days just a drill.

An index is a sign that usually has a physical or causal relationship that explains it. Some examples include frost caused by cold temperatures or a 'honk' caused by someone pressing a car horn.

Symbols are more loosely defined signs. They are also used to mean or represent something but have arbitrary relationships. For a example a two-striped chevron could indicate the rank of Corporal or it could represent the Chevron Corporation. Another example is the buzz of an alarm clock that means it's time to get up.
